Fossil Butte NM and Fossil Collecting - Photo Update

This will be quick post as it's getting late and the internet connection is really slow here.  Not sure when we'll have internet access again.

The day started out nice and sunny as we went on a fish fossil collecting trip.  Unfortunately we didn't want to chance the gravel roads to go the quarry that we really wanted to visit because of all the rain and our lack of 4 wheel drive on Jane. So we arranged a trip with a place that drove you out to their quarry instead.

There was an amazing amount of fish fossils there, but because of all the rain the shale was quite crumbly and most of them broke.  We did manage to find quite a few nice ones, however...our guide from the place proceeded to break most of them as he threw them in the truck.  He had no respect for something that had survived 50 million years!  We'll be able to glue some of them back together, but it was a real disappointment after the excitement of finding them.

Kelly and Unhelpful Guide

We met a couple of families at the place after that were traveling together.  One of them was from Japan and they were admiring Jane.  Turns out they had stayed in the same hotel and taken pictures of her the night before.  Kelly got to show them all about the car and the mods she had done.  Yes, I did tell them I was Japanese and couldn't speak the language.  We had a very nice chat in English.

From there we visited Fossil Butte NM and hiked the quarry trail.  We finished the hike just before yet another storm blew in, this time dropping some small hail on Jane.  No harm done though and she looks a bit cleaner now.

Postscript - This guy put our parking lot repairs to shame!

Now That's On-Site Repair!
